(Frankfort - June 30, 2004)
Crit Luallen, the Commonwealth's Auditor of Public Accounts, successfully completed surgery today to remove a section of her colon containing a tumor. The growth was benign on a preliminary biopsy, with final pathology tests pending.
Dr. John Stewart performed the surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lexington, where Ms. Luallen is expected to stay four to seven days. The surgery requires three to four weeks of recovery, in which doctors have limited Ms. Luallen's movement. She will be able to conduct official business from her home after the first week. Doctor Stewart anticipates a full recovery.
Ms. Luallen released the following statement: "The surgery was successful because a routine screening colonoscopy discovered the problem early. I encourage everyone, especially those with a family history, to have regular cancer screenings. It is important, not just for ourselves, but for our families, that each of us discuss with our own physicians the benefits of preventive medicine." |
