(Frankfort - July 29, 2003) Auditor of Public Accounts Ed Hatchett has found that Transportation Cabinet computers were used 6000 times to visit and view pornographic websites or images during a 4-day test period. Auditors also found that since early April 2003, French hackers have used the Transportation Cabinet’s computer system to:
  • Store and distribute pirated recently-released movies, music CDs and DVDs, TV shows, and new computer games
  • Post and distribute pirated copyrighted French medical textbooks
  • Host an internet chat room

Movies that opened on Friday July 25, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, and Spy Kids 3D: Game Over, were posted to the site within 24 hours of release.

No password protection was found in 33 routers/switches used by the Transportation Cabinet, opening the Cabinet, other connected state computers, and any networked federal agencies to attack and exploitation. Once within the system, hackers installed software and tools that gave them access to the passwords of core technology administrators and other Transportation employees.

“For three years, I have been warning those who manage state systems to make computer security job one,” said Hatchett. “ Time after time, Transportation and the Governor’s Office for Technology were asleep at the switch while state computers have been used for illegal purposes”

Hatchett referred his findings to Attorney General Ben Chandler and U.S. Attorney Greg Van Tatenhove.
