The Central Kentucky Education Cooperative (CKEC) received a clean auditor’s opinion for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2000, despite uninsured cash balances of more than $300 thousand and duplicate expense reimbursements to the executive director.
The CPA firm of Charles T. Mitchell Company, LLP, performed the audit, the first since 1996. The audit found that the cooperative employs an executive director, but makes payments to a corporation for those services. Further, the Executive Director received a monthly travel allowance, in addition to reimbursement for actual travel expenses. CKEC has 20 member school districts. It is one of nine Kentucky school co-ops required to be audited under a bill passed during the 2000 General Assembly. The bill makes the State Auditor responsible for the audits and permits private CPAs to perform the fieldwork. |
